How did Gardening save Bori Kent’s life?
A Special Encounter for Holocaust and Genocide Month
In this month’s Virtual Coffee Encounter, Wednesday, April 17th at 12 noon CDT, we remember the life of a Holocaust survivor Barbara Kent known as Bori. Born Borbola Grunwald in Hungary in 1913, she had an idyllic childhood until the Nazi takeover of her country. Measures against the Jews were swift.
Her brothers and brother-in-law were taken first. She and her sister were also captured and taken to Auschwitz. As the Allies came closer to the camp, she was marched to Bergen Belsen along with her sister. They were liberated there, but her sister was already too ill and died before leaving the camp. Only one other brother and her brother-in-law survived, along with Bori.
The story of her survival has a special connection to the Holocaust Garden of Hope.
In fact, Bori gardened her whole life.
Bori was sent to Sweden to recover, then reunited with some family members in New York City a year later. She met and married Bela Kent, they had two sons. Bori passed away in Kansas City in 2010.
Bori’s son Dr. Thomas Kent, MD, is a neurologist at Methodist Hospital -TMC and a scientist with the TAMU Institute of Biotechnology. He will be sharing insights into his mother’s story.
