Rabbi Alan Freedman joined Temple Beth Shalom as our first full-time rabbi in July 2002, following his ordination at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati.

Rabbi Freedman also holds a Juris Doctor from the University of Pennsylvania Law School and an undergraduate degree from The George Washington University. Before ordination, Rabbi Freedman was a student rabbi at Temple Shalom in Quincy, Illinois, and was the rabbinic intern for two years at Rockdale Temple in Cincinnati, Ohio.

In addition to serving at Temple Beth Shalom, Rabbi Freedman has taught in the SAGE Program at The University of Texas at Austin and is an active member of the interfaith clergy community. He serves as a member of the Ethics Committee for the St. David’s Hospital system, co-chairs the Clergy Advisory Board for the Austin Area Interreligious Ministries, and chairs the Clergy Advisory Committee as well as serving on the board of Planned Parenthood in Austin.

Rabbi Alan Freedman was no stranger to Texas. He served for two summers as Assistant Director for Education at Greene Family Camp, the UAHC summer camp in Bruceville, Texas, and is a member of the faculty at Greene each summer.

Sharing his commitment to Judaism and to Temple Beth Shalom are Rabbi Freedman’s wife, Lori, and their three daughters, Erin, Lindsay, and Jessica.
