The Impact of Liberation: Survivors & Veterans

When the camps were liberated, survivors and military personnel alike suffered from the impact of liberation.   Most Jewish survivors had nowhere to go, as their entire communities had been destroyed, and their families had disappeared.  Moreover, there were often threats on their lives of those who attempted to return, for anti-Semitism was still alive.  Military personnel who discovered the camps were horrified at the devastation they found there.   In some cases, all that awaited the liberating army was a sea of corpses.  For survivors and liberators, the trauma of liberation lingered long after the actual heroic event, decades after the war was over.

“I will go before you and make the crooked places straight; I will break in pieces the gates of bronze and cut the bars of iron.  I will give you the treasures of darkness and hidden riches of secret places, that you may know that I, the Lord, Who call you by your name, am the God of Israel” Isaiah 45:2-3
